Project Description

Ordinary Time

The silk for these banners was given by Claudia Grice. Her father brought it from Japan in 1945. It was all pure white, various weights and patterns, lengths and widths. Although it was 70 years old, it was in perfect condition.

The design of the four panels is meant to reflect our local environment, with layers of trees, both painted and outlined in gold. Each one has a unique symbol at the top; a star, a sun, a bird, a rainbow.

Claudia’s father, then in his 90’s, was able to attend the first use and dedication of these banners. I believe he was pleased and touched to see his silk used in this way.  Each panel is 30 inches by ten feet.  2010
