Project Description

Holy Darkness

These panels were created to invite people into reflection on the theme of “Holy Darkness” during the season of Lent. They are a meditation inspired by the discovery that 95% of our universe is “dark matter” and “dark energy.” We only see 5% of our universe, which I have suggested with images derived from the pictures of the Hubble telescope. What does it mean for the symbolic language of faith that darkness is indispensable to what and who we are?

To try to visualize what is invisible and yet to evoke this mystery of creation, made each panel of two parts. The front panel is made of painted Tyvek and suggests the flow of energy as well as observable objects. The underlying panel is composed of several layers of sheer fabric, painted, to show new possibilities behind the presenting darkness. Each panel is inches by 144 inches.
