Project Description

Baccalaureate 1997

The 1997 graduating class at Andover Newton Theological School asked for my help to create a visual focal point for the Baccalaureate service and related festivities to follow in The Meeting House. They specified that they wanted “metal flames.” I used copper roof flashing to make solid hammered flames and heavy copper wire and screen wire to create transparent flames. Candle stands were improvised from large cans wrapped in colored foil paper with masses of flowers provided by a student/florist. It was quite a challenge to both conceive and construct so that it was moveable but stood freely. The graduates all took turns having their photographs taken in front of the installation, so I guess they were pleased enough.
