After the Storm (The Katrina Cross) 2007 This standing cross was created from debris of broken glass and pottery collected around First United Methodist Church, Gulfport, Mississippi, and nearby Arlean Hall at Gulfside Conference Center, which was destroyed by hurricane Katrina in 2005. It also contains bits of stained glass from the sanctuary of my own church in Waynesville, which was destroyed by fire in 1994. The cross is a metaphor for hope and new life after a disaster. It also raises questions about our place in creation and God's creative process. It reminds us that the world has changed and will always change, and that change may be necessary for new growth. The cross is being used at many Methodist conferences, including the UMC General Conference in April, 2008, and will eventually have its permanent home in the new Worship Center at Gulfside.
